Energy optimisation in food and beverage industry

Danfoss Solutions A/S has specialised in reducing the energy consumption of large energy-consuming industrial systems in the food production sector, such as breweries, slaughterhouses and dairies.
By combining state-of-the-art technology with Danfoss’ long-standing knowledge of process optimisation within refrigeration, heating, ventilation and speed control, Danfoss Solutions A/S has managed to reduce a production company’s energy consumption by 10-15 per cent.

Danfoss Solutions A/S highly prioritises employee involvement in its energy savings activities. When all of the company’s employees are more conscious of their conduct and its impact on the company’s energy consumption, the energy consumption can be reduced by several additional percentages.

Danfoss Solutions has carried out a range of projects for companies such as Carlsberg, Tulip and Coca-Cola. At Carlsberg’s brewery in Fredericia, they managed to save five million DKK on the energy bill in just 2.5 years (from August 2003 to March 2006). One of the major gains with regards to electricity was obtained by installing frequency converters on engines, pumps and compressed air compressors which regulated the speed according to the consumption.

Another area where it was possible to save money was in the process which transforms CO2 from liquid to gas. The brewery used to use hot water for the evaporation of CO2; today they use the excess heat from the refrigeration system. In this way, they save both heat and electricity.

The total savings meant that the total emission of CO2 from the production plant in Fredericia was reduced by 2,500 tonnes in the same period.

Corporate Citizenship

Danfoss’ overall goal within Corporate Citizenship is "keeping our own house in order".
This applies to employees, so that they have an attractive workplace and a healthy work-ing environment. It applies to the environment, where Danfoss products contribute to energy savings, and where the environmental impact of their production is constantly being reduced.
And it applies, in a broad sense, to social and ethical responsibility.
Efforts are continually being intensified, because when employee satisfaction is high, consumption of resources is as low as possible, and the company’s ethics and reputation are good, the result is a positive effect on the accounting bottom line.
